Ancient History Encyclopedia is a non-profit company publishing the world's most-read history encyclopedia. Our mission is to engage people with cultural heritage and to improve history education worldwide. We make history engaging and exciting, delivering the highest-quality articles on ancient history, videos, interactive maps, and news to millions of people from across the globe.

The Education Graphic Designer will create an engaging and on-brand identity for all our educational materials. This includes:
  • General layout
  • Use and quality of illustrations
  • Indenting, framing, use of headings
  • Choice of print
  • Amount of information on a page
  • Quality of reproduction
The Education Graphic Designer will create a visual identity, together with the Head of Education, to be approved by relevant stakeholders. Then, she will layout our education material based on the content provided by our Content Creators accordingly. Your graphics and general design should capture the user’s attention and communicate the right message: Our goal is to make class preparation extremely easy and quick for teachers, and help students understand, analyse, memorize better.

We need someone with a passion for history, pedagogy and a creative flair. You are comfortable dealing with people of varied backgrounds, customs, and manners. You are self-motivated and can work with little supervision. Ideally, you have some experience working in educational publishing. You will report directly to the Education Director (Marion Wadowski).

This position is a volunteer role with some compensation. This means that you do not get paid for your work. However it is only fair that when we sell a resource and, if you participated in its creation, you receive your share of the 30% profit, split between the creators (usually the Content Creator and you).

If you can communicate well and you are able to devote 5 hours or more a week to this position, we’d like to hear from you.

Requirements:

  • Proven graphic designing experience, particularly with print layouts
  • A strong portfolio of designs, layouts, illustrations or other graphics
  • Familiarity with design software and technologies (such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • A keen eye for aesthetics and details
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work methodically and meet deadlines
  • Strong commitment to AHE’s mission and identity. Familiarity with and passion for ancient history and pedagogy a huge plus.

  • Conceptualize visuals based on requirements
  • Prepare rough drafts and present ideas
  • Develop illustrations and other designs using software or by hand
  • Use the appropriate colors and layouts for each graphic
  • Work with Content Creators and Head of Education to produce final design
  • Amend designs after feedback and make them available to the team immediately
  • Ensure final graphics and layouts are visually appealing and on-brand
