Developing AI applications for ecosystem management frameworks
Position Summary: New Mexico State University is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Scientist to contribute to ongoing efforts in the use of AI tools to investigate and synthesize knowledge about the drivers of ecosystem variability across continental scales. The successful candidate will support project goals by integrating new neural network architectures, foundational models, and automated interface applications to advance the knowledge and spatial prediction of land health and land management concepts. The applicant will work closely with our team of research scientists from New Mexico State University, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, USDA-Agricultural Research Service, and U.S. Geological Survey.

The successful applicant will:
• Integrate AI tools to optimize ecological management system development,
• Publish scientific manuscripts in peer reviewed journals,
• Collaborate with our research team to achieve project goals
Qualifications: We are seeking applicants with a PhD in computer science, machine learning, data science, applied mathematics/statistics, engineering, physics, computational ecology, or related fields. Qualified candidates should have demonstrated experience working with neural network architectures, foundational models, automated interfaces, and AI workflows beyond simple prompt engineering. Preferred experience includes training in self-supervised learning models with a willingness to learn about ecology, soils, and natural sciences.
Salary and Benefits: NMSU postdoc salaries and benefits are nationally competitive, while the cost of living in Las Cruces, New Mexico is relatively low. Funding for the position is available now with annual renewal up to three years depending on performance. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
