During his Ph.D. studies, Javier applied his knowledge of signal processing, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and digital image processing to the analysis of different types of medical imaging—first in the Computer Technology Institute of València (ITI, Spain), later in the Neuroscience Institute of Alicante/National Research Council in Spain (CSIC)—which is the most significant public research institution in Spain and the third-largest in Europe.
