Journal

Calendars are more than events. They're also your day-to-day companion. Paper planners include a place for notes and thoughts alongside the calendar.

A journal fits perfectly inside HEY Calendar. You can use it before a day to add notes or reminders, and maybe attach a doc that you'll need.

You can also use it to look back. Drop a few photos from your adventures, jot down notes from the meeting, capture progress toward a goal, or just reflect on the day. It's a blank sheet of paper you can use in a myriad of ways.

Journal will make HEY Calendar even more personal.

Appetite

We have a 3-week appetite for this, but it could be less.

Solution

The journal is tied to your identity, so there's one per user. Each day is a new entry.

You open the journal for a day in the day view. It opens a Trix text area inside a modal. You can drop images and files into it, too. I assume placing them inline will be the straight shot since that's how it works elsewhere.
Pop up the journal for the day with a click. It should auto-save as you go. 90.9 KB View full-size Download

From the user perspective, it will look like every day has a journal entry waiting, but if there's a benefit to only creating a entry when someone initiates it, that works. Many will never use it and even those who do may be sporadic.

You can add an entry to any day in the past or future.

When a day has an entry (you've added some content), there's a visual indication on the day view and maybe the week view, too. In week view, maybe we show the icon on hover when there isn't one yet, similar to adding an image for the day. Click it to bring up the modal.

Scroll through your Journal
We'll have an index page where you can scroll through your entries from latest to oldest.
Clicking the date for an entry takes you to it in the day view.

We might include a date widget so you can quickly get to your last birthday or another key date. It would neat if the days with entries were highlighted in the picker.

I thought about adding new entries here, but lean against it. If you want to add a new entry for next Thursday, go to it in the day view. After all, what's happening that day is helpful context. I wouldn't edit entries in the index view either. We can try it out and see if that feels restrictive, though.

Both Time Tracking and Habits are things that are often elsewhere, but make much more sense when they're tied to days in your calendar.

That's true for Journal, too. Let's do it!
