Take it to the Porch: Maintaining an Equity Focus in the face of Oppressive Structures

On February 26th Wendy Stewart (Dean of Counseling & Student Development at MiraCosta) and Nicole Jones (Dean, Counseling Services at Cuyamaca College) addressed the impact of traditional approaches to career and educational counseling that can ultimately harm Black students and discuss equity-framed approaches and strategies to enact change and sustain the work.
We urge you all to take this important conversation back to your colleges. Below are a couple of questions for you to think about.
- How would your day be different if you started from a place of “how can I center Black students, staff, and faculty today?”
- How can you and your colleagues engage in honest and vulnerable dialogue about beliefs and assumptions about Black students?
