Tactics    (tip: click “compact view” upper right)

  • Specific forms of creative action, designed to move a strategy forward.
  • Finding the right tactic for a given situation requires creativity & experimentation.
  • Tactics without strategy are like shots fired in the dark, we make lots of noise but we’re not likely to hit the target.

Viewing Tactics on the BT website, choose one or two to study and explain to others.

At this 1st Meeting, we discussed several Tactics from the BT Toolbox. Culture Jamming is to alter a meme to make a subversive political point. Jim suggested wearing culture jamming messages to provoke conversation (sheet protector, masking tape, safety pin, homemade lanyard from nylon string).

Political Cartoonist are potential good sources for culture jamming ideas.  Here are a few links:
Angelique Haugerud has studied satirical political activists Billionaires For Bush and Trillionaires For Trump as a more sophisticated form of culture jamming. Their focus is on wealth inequality and big money in politics.

Angelique has written a relevant book, No Billionaires Left Behind: Satirical Activism In AmericaBarb Taylor has created ~180 posters and more recently buttons which may be useful for culture jamming.

Sara Baldwin mentioned the Tactic of Distributed Action and suggested the idea of sequential, coordinated signs at protests that convey a message (e.g. like the Burma Shave signs along the highway). On Basecamp, Ed Orton suggested a variation of culture jamming that might be described as ‘culture reappropriation’. He noted that right-wing groups have appropriated the phrase “We The People.” Ed suggests that we need to reappropriate that phrase. One way would be for us to use this phrase as footer in our communication:

I mentioned that I have made 180+ signs for demonstrations. Every time I feel anxious about the news I make another sign (I probably need a 12-step group!). You can see them in my Substack post Signs for Democracy! but I've just put together a more organized (and I hope more painless) presentation in a series of short videos. Here's the YouTube playlist for Signs for Democracy! from Momentum Blue Seattle.

I've also been thinking about our culture jamming discussion. Turns out I've made a number of buttons, stickers, and memes that are kinda culture jammy. There's way too many to attach to an email so I put them in a Google Drive folder:

Also, the first part of the last video in the above playlist has several of my more humorous signs.
