One of the most intriguing numerical patterns in Revelation is the repeated appearance of the same prophetic time period expressed in three different ways:

  • 42 months
  • 1260 days
  • “time, times, and half a time”

These expressions all represent three and a half years.

This pattern appears several times in Revelation and directly connects back to the prophecies of Daniel.

The Pattern Appears in Revelation

First, Revelation speaks of 42 months.

“And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.”— Revelation 13:5 (KJV)

42 months equals 3½ years.

The Same Period as 1260 Days

The book also describes 1260 days.

“And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.”— Revelation 12:6 (KJV)

In ancient prophetic calendars:

  • 1 year = 360 days
  • 3½ years = 1260 days

So this is the same time period expressed differently.

“Time, Times, and Half a Time”

Revelation also uses a phrase taken directly from Daniel.

“The woman were given two wings of a great eagle… that she might fly into the wilderness… for a time, and times, and half a time.”— Revelation 12:14 (KJV)

This means:

Time = 1 year

Times = 2 years

Half a time = ½ year

Total = 3½ years again.

The Source of the Pattern: Daniel

This time period first appears in Daniel’s prophecy.

“And they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.”— Daniel 7:25 (KJV)

Daniel connects this period with a persecuting ruler.

Revelation applies the same timeframe to the beast and the persecution of God's people.

Why 3½ Years Matters

Three and a half years is exactly half of seven.

Since seven symbolizes completion or perfection, half of seven represents something cut short or incomplete.

Jesus used similar language about a shortened period of tribulation:

“Except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved.”— Matthew 24:22 (KJV)

Where the Pattern Appears in Revelation

Passage | Time Expression

Revelation 11:2 | 42 months
Revelation 11:3 | 1260 days
Revelation 12:6 | 1260 days
Revelation 12:14 | time, times, half a time
Revelation 13:5 | 42 months

The same timeframe repeats again and again.

A Historical Echo

Interestingly, the Jewish-Roman war that ended in AD 70 lasted about 3½ years (AD 66–70).

Because of this, some scholars believe the pattern may reflect that conflict.

Others believe the number represents a symbolic period of persecution that may occur multiple times in history.

The Deeper Meaning

The number seems to communicate a powerful message:

Oppressive powers may rise for a time…

But their authority is limited.

God sets boundaries on evil.

“For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”— Revelation 19:6 (KJV)

Summary

Revelation repeatedly uses the same prophetic timeframe:

  • 42 months
  • 1260 days
  • time, times, and half a time

All equal 3½ years, a symbolic period of intense conflict that is limited and temporary.

The pattern links Daniel, Revelation, and the history of persecution, reminding believers that even during hardship, God remains in control.

Here at the Underground News Network, we can also show you one last astonishing pattern many people miss:

There is a parallel between the structure of Revelation and the layout of the ancient Jewish temple, where the visions move from the outer courts to the throne of God like a priest entering the Holy of Holies.
