Jewish Mordecai stolen from the Babylonian God Marduk.
⚔️ THE CLAIM:
It is alleged that Jewish Mordecai, a central figure in the Book of Esther, was “stolen” from the Babylonian god Marduk, based on the phonetic similarity of their names and both being positioned in influential roles in ancient Persia/Babylon.
Let us weigh this claim against the truth of the Holy Scriptures (KJV) and expose the flawed foundation of this argument.
📖 WHO IS MORDECAI (ACCORDING TO SCRIPTURE)?
“Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai… who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity…”
— Esther 2:5-6
Mordecai:
-
Was a real Jew, descendant of Kish, a Benjamite, of the tribe of Saul.
-
Lived in Shushan, the Persian capital during the Babylonian exile
-
Raised Esther, warned the king of assassination, and was honored by God through divine providence
-
Played a key role in the deliverance of the Jews from Haman’s genocidal plot
Mordecai is a man, a servant, and a witness to God’s salvation — not a god.
🏛️ WHO IS MARDUK?
Marduk (A.K.A. Bel):
-
Chief deity of Babylon, associated with magic, storms, and kingship
-
Son of Ea (Enki) in Babylonian mythology
-
Central figure in the Enuma Elish, where he defeats Tiamat
-
Worshipped in temples, prayed to, and honored with sacrifices
Marduk is a mythological god, pagan idol, and the epitome of Babylonian pride and rebellion against the Most High.
❌ WHY THE “NAME SIMILARITY” ARGUMENT FAILS
-
“Mordecai” does not mean or imply “Marduk”
-
It is not unusual for Jewish captives to bear names that were linguistically adapted to their host empire (e.g. Daniel = Belteshazzar)
-
The use of similar syllables (e.g., "Mar" or "Mur") is coincidental and linguistically explainable
“Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them…”
— 1 Corinthians 10:7
💣 THE TRUE GOAL BEHIND THIS CLAIM
This false claim:
-
Seeks to undermine the divine inspiration of Scripture
-
Tries to blur the line between the God of Israel and pagan idols
-
Pushes syncretism and Freemasonic Egypto-Babylonian theology
-
Erases Jewish identity and Biblical history
It is an attack on the Book of Esther, a book that reveals God’s hidden hand, protecting His people without even mentioning His name.
“For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place…”
— Esther 4:14
✅ VERDICT:
-
Mordecai is a real historical man, not a mythological fabrication
-
The name similarity to Marduk is superficial, not substantive
-
No evidence of literary plagiarism exists — only theological deception
-
The Book of Esther glorifies divine deliverance, not pagan invention
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
— Exodus 20:3
