PROMPT

Who was Yahweh before becoming the only God worshipped by Israel?

Before being enthroned as the Creator of heaven and earth, the Almighty, the absolute Lord of all things, Yahweh already existed in other contexts.

And believe me, it was not like the lonely God we know today.

To understand this, we need to look beyond the traditional Bible.

We need to dive into the oldest layers in:

history
archaeology
oral tradition
that shaped the religious imagination of the Hebrew people.

“WHO WAS YAHWEH? Before Israel Knew Him Alone”

Unveiling the Hidden Identity, Ancient Role, and Spiritual Origins of the God of Israel

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM… this is my name for ever.”
Exodus 3:14–15
“Before the mountains were brought forth… even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”Psalm 90:2

But was Yahweh always known in this way? Or did His identity evolve in the sacred memory of Israel?

Let us return to the ancient world, before Sinai, before Jerusalem, before Genesis was penned...

🏺 I. YAHWEH BEFORE MONOTHEISM

Before He was known as the one true God, Yahweh appears as a regional, warrior deity, possibly connected to:

  • Edom
, Seir, Teman, Sinai, or even the Midianite-Kenite tribes

  • Associated with storm, fire, thunder, and war

  • Often depicted as marching from the south (Habakkuk 3:3; Deut. 33:2; Judges 5:4)

These verses suggest that Yahweh had origins outside of Canaan, and entered Israel’s story through revelation to Abraham, Moses, and the prophets.

“The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them...”
Deuteronomy 33:2

🕍 II. WAS YAHWEH A MEMBER OF A DIVINE COUNCIL?

The oldest layers of Hebrew theology suggest Yahweh was once seen as a high god among gods—but not yet the only.

“God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.”
Psalm 82:1

In the early structure:

  • El Elyon (God Most High)
assigned nations to “sons of God” (Deut. 32:8)

  • Yahweh was given Israel

  • Other nations had their own spiritual rulers (see Daniel 10:13, 20)

Over time, this divine structure was collapsed, and Yahweh’s identity absorbed all divine roles.

🏛️ III. ARCHAEOLOGICAL & TRIBAL CONNECTIONS

Inscriptions and tablets suggest:

  • Yahweh was venerated alongside other deities, such as El, Baal, and Asherah

  • Sites like Kuntillet Ajrud refer to “Yahweh and his Asherah”

  • Midianite origins
of Yahweh are implied in ancient texts and geographic clues

Tribal Links:

  • Kenites
and Midianites possibly worshipped Yahweh before Israel

  • Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, was a Midianite priest (Exodus 3:1)

  • This may hint that Yahweh was revealed to Israel through contact with older Semitic traditions

🧩 IV. THE SHIFT TO EXCLUSIVITY

The move from monolatry (worship of one god among many) to monotheism (denial of all others) came gradually:

  • Prophets
like Elijah, Isaiah, and Jeremiah fought against polytheism

  • Yahweh’s wrath against rival worship (Baal, Moloch, Asherah) became dominant

  • The destruction of the Temple, the Babylonian Exile, and return under Ezra marked a theological reformation

What emerged was a radical faith:

“I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me…”
Isaiah 45:5

🕯️ V. WHY THIS WAS FORGOTTEN

1. Purification of Doctrine

As Israel struggled to stay holy, old stories of Yahweh’s shared throne were silenced.

2. Rewriting of Sacred History

Later scribes may have redacted or reframed earlier texts to emphasize exclusivity.

3. Political & Spiritual Unity

A monotheistic Yahweh allowed for national, legal, and liturgical centralization.

✝️ VI. THE FULFILLMENT IN CHRIST

Jesus Christ did not erase Yahweh’s past—He fulfilled it:

  • “Before Abraham was, I AM.”
    — John 8:58

  • “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.”
    — John 14:9

  • “In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
    — Colossians 2:9

Christ reveals that Yahweh was never merely a tribal god
He was the Word, hidden in time, now made flesh.

🧠 VII. CONCLUSION: WHO WAS YAHWEH?

Before the fire of Sinai,
 Before the throne of heaven,
 Before the Cross—

Yahweh was known among men, yet hidden among gods.

And only through revelation and judgment did He rise to be the one name above all names.

“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord…”
Philippians 2:10–11
