However, the Himyarite Empire was disestablished in 525 CE, after being invaded by the Kingdom of Aksum (which is located in modern-day Eritrea and Ethiopia).

At the beginning, Himyar was similar in size its neighbors the kingdoms of Saba and of Hadramaout.
During the early days of the Himyarite Kingdom, the region was mainly under the domination of the Qataban Kingdom, which ruled most parts of Yemen between 500 BCE and 110 BCE.
However, the Qataban Kingdom slowly declined:
this led Himyar to claim its independence by 110 BC.
Meanwhile, at that moment, among the kingdoms that were dominated by the Qatabans, it was not Himyar but the Hadramaout Kingdom that ruled most of Yemen.
At the same time, the Himyarite Kingdom took power over a large number of small neighboring kingdoms, especially the Kingdom of Zafar, which would soon become the capital of the Himyarites.
Progressively, Himyar became prominent in the region, notably after conquering the legendary Kingdom of Saba.
This conquest was made in 280 CE, under the rule of the Himyarite kings Yasir Yuhan’m and his son Shammir Yuharish.

The Himyarite Empire also continued its expansion, notably in 440 CE and 450 CE with the kings Abikarib As’ad and his son Hassan Yhanim, who expanded the Himyarite rule to central Arabia.
DECLINE AND RELIGIOUS WARS
However, religious conflicts quickly arose and led to the decline of the Empire.
In 380 CE, the king Abikarib As’ad and his court converted to Judaism.
Before that, Himyarite rulers were all pagans.
After this conversion, pagan temples and worshiping places were all destroyed.
At the same time, Christianity arose in the region.
At the beginning, Christianity was seen as a sect and the local authorities were opposed to this.
Notably, during the rule of the Himyarite king Sharahbi’il Ya’far, persecutions against Christians took place.
Religious fights began between the Christians and the Jews, leading to a civil war.
In 519 CE, the Christian king of Aksoum (modern-day Ethiopia), Kaleb Ella Asbeha, supported actively the coup of the Christian Himyarite Madikarib Yafur.
Madikarib Yafur was then executed, in 522 CE, by the Jewish Himyarite King Yusuf As’ar Yath’ar who also launched a wave of persecutions against Christians.
During the Sixth Century CE, in addition to the numerous religious troubles, the Himyarite Empire faced an important political decline.

In 525 CE, the King Kaleb Ella Asbeha of Aksoum invaded Yemen.
This led to the suicide of the Himyarite King Yusuf As’ar Yath’ar.
Following this invasion, Christianity became the main religion while most of the Jewish Himyarites had to convert or to leave the area.
Due to the political instabilities, the Himyarite moved their capital from Zafar to Sana’a.
The foreign occupations were widely rejected by the Himyarites.
