Under the authority of God, Adam, who was made a little lower than the angels, would have been the ruler of the kingdom of heaven upon earth, so to speak.

Formerly known as Lucifer, Satan was the one who was initially crowned with glory, and had dominion over the creation, and now, here was a man and a woman, made a little lower than himself, receiving from God, the crown he had lost.
Pride had been his downfall, and what a jolt to his pride this must have been.
If for no other reason, surely this stirred up his hatred of mankind, created in the image and the likeness of God.
And what a kick in the teeth it must have been, knowing the earth he once had dominion over, had now been given to these lesser beings.
Few today believe the Earth and its fullness belong to the Lord.

Sadly, the subtlety of the Serpent god, led to Adam's sin, and he too lost his crown.

The old Serpent Since the dawn of time, Snake or Serpent worship is present in many ancient cultures, which should come as little or no surprise, for it is a form of Satan worship.
The old Serpent or Dragon is another name for Satan, the Devil (Revelation 20:2) and Jesus says that Satan is the god of this world. (2 Corinthians 4:4).
Hence the Bible indirectly informs us that the god of this world is an ancient serpent god.
During the millennial reign of Christ, Satan was unable to deceive the nations, because he was bound within the bottomless pit for the entire thousand years.
At the end of the thousand years Satan was released, and able to get up to his old tricks again, by deceiving the nations of the world. (Revelation 20:3.)
Make no mistake.
Satan, not Jesus Christ, is the god of this world (age).
Although God the creator is sovereign to rule and over-rule in all world affairs, according to Jesus, the god of this world is a deceiving, murderous liar, and always has been. (John 8:44).
Supernatural beings known as the principalities and powers, are the invisible rulers of this world. (Ephesians 6:12)
Along with a legion of lesser entities known as evil spirits, devils or demons, they operate under the leadership of Satan, who in exchange for acknowledgement and worship, has the authority to offer men kingdoms, riches, and glory. (Luke 4:5-6).
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

Whilst far from easy to understand, under the sovereign rule and will of God, and by decree of the 'Watchers', the kings of the earth tend not to be righteous men but are the basest (most morally reprehensible) of men. (Daniel 4:17).
It's a question of putting things into perspective, for the rulers of nations have not attained that position of authority by their own wisdom, nor due to their own efforts.
Though he is the god of this world, neither does Satan ordain kings and queens.
It is the Lord God alone who removes and sets kings in their kingdoms. (Daniel 4:17).
